Travelwise Consultation Parnell District School has been working with Auckland transport in an effort to make the roads around our school safer for the children. There is also a concerted effort being made to try to reduce the number of cars before and after school and the congestion this causes. The engineering division of the council has come up with some proposals which alter the road configuration in this locality and which are currently open for public consultation.
Letters to residents were sent out of 14 September and the council has already received some good feedback on the proposals. The current engineering proposals are also outlined on the school website which can be accessed by clicking here: Travel-wise Consultation The consultation period will close on 12 October 2011. In brief the proposals are: A. Intersection of Gladstone Road/ St Stephens Ave/ Takutai St At this intersection, the primary concerns raised by the school community are related to the lack of pedestrian crossing facility on Takutai Street as well as the relatively high speed at which vehicles approach this intersection. To address these safety issues, the following are proposed: Installation of new traffic islands on Takutai St at its intersection with St Stephens Ave and to change the existing ‘Give Way’ control to a ‘STOP’ control. The traffic islands will improve pedestrian safety by providing a safe waiting area and also reducing the crossing distance. Installation of new traffic islands on St Stephens Ave. The new traffic islands will create a sense of constriction and thus will reduce the speed of the traffic approaching the intersection. Installation of new broken yellow lines around both the eastern and western corners of Takutai St as shown on the attached plan. This will result in loss of on-street parking spaces. However, this is essential to improve pedestrian safety by providing a better view of approaching traffic as well as making pedestrians more conspicuous to drivers; Associated footpath, pram crossings, road marking and lighting improvements. B. Intersection of St Stephens Ave and Canterbury Place The school community has raised concern over the lack of pedestrian crossing facility on Canterbury Place near its intersection with St Stephens Ave. To address this safety issue, the following are proposed: Installation of new traffic islands on Canterbury Place at its intersection with St Stephens Ave. This will improve pedestrian safety by providing a safe waiting area and also reducing the crossing distance; Extension of existing broken yellow lines around both the northern and southern corners of Canterbury Place and along the eastern kerb line of St Stephens Ave as shown on the attached plan. This will result in loss of on-street parking spaces. However, this is essential to improve pedestrian safety by providing a better view of approaching traffic as well as making pedestrians more conspicuous to drivers; Associated footpath, pram crossings, and roadmarking.
